Citation

Professor Thakare Gaurav Sanstha (PTGS) proudly conferred the Second Ganit Ratna Award upon Prof. Neena Gupta in recognition of her exceptional contributions to Algebraic Geometry and Commutative Algebra—two of the most intricate fields in mathematics.

Academic Journey & Achievements

Prof. Gupta completed her Ph.D. at the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Kolkata in 2012 under the guidance of Prof. Amartya Kumar Datta, following an exceptional academic record throughout her undergraduate and postgraduate studies.

In just over a decade, she has produced an extraordinary body of research on topics such as:

  • Zariski Cancellation and Characterization Problems
  • Affine Fibrations
  • Affine Forms
  • Separable Forms
  • Retracts of Polynomial Rings
  • Hilbert’s 14th Problem

Prof. Gupta is widely celebrated for solving the Fundamental Zariski Cancellation Problem, earning her:

  • INSA Medal for Young Scientists (2014)
  • A.K. Agarwal Prize from the Indian Mathematical Society (2015)

Her subsequent research includes significant breakthroughs:

  • In 2017, she constructed counter examples related to Miyanishi’s Conjecture, establishing new theories in the process.
  • In 2020, she and collaborators advanced results on Zariski’s Theorem concerning Hilbert’s 14th Problem.
  • She continues to produce pioneering results in polynomial rings, affine geometry, and locally nilpotent derivations.

Awards & Global Recognition

Prof. Gupta’s stellar achievements have been recognized with numerous prestigious honors, including:

  • Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize (2019) — youngest-ever recipient in Mathematical Sciences, breaking a 42-year record.
  • DST-ICTP-IMU Ramanujan Prize (2021) — an international accolade for young mathematicians from developing countries.
  • Fellowship of the Indian Academy of Sciences (2021).
  • Nari Shakti Puraskar (2022) — conferred by the President of India, Hon. Shri Ram Nath Kovind, on International Women’s Day.

In 2022, at the prestigious International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM)—the world’s leading mathematical conference—Prof. Gupta was invited to deliver two talks in distinct sections:

  • Algebra
  • Algebraic and Complex Geometry

This rare honor is considered a testament to her global influence in mathematics.

Infosys Prize Recognition

  • Further affirming the credibility of PTGS’s selection process, Prof. Neena Gupta was later honoured with the Infosys Prize—one of India’s highest recognitions for scientific research—highlighting the alignment of PTGS’s vision with global academic excellence.
