Citation

Professor Thakare Gaurav Sanstha (PTGS) proudly conferred the Fourth Ganit Ratna Award upon Prof. Apoorva Khare in recognition of his wide-ranging and exceptional contributions across multiple branches of mathematics.

Academic Journey & Achievements

Born into a family of scientists, Prof. Khare’s mathematical brilliance was evident early on. At just 16, he was selected among the top 30 students from across India for the International Mathematics Olympiad Training Camp (1996).

After completing his Ph.D. and postdoctoral research abroad, he returned to India and joined the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru—where he continues to advance mathematical research.

What sets Prof. Khare apart is his uncommon versatility:

  • His primary research began in Representation Theory, where he has the largest number of publications.
  • He later ventured into Linear Algebra and Operator Theory, particularly focusing on Löwner positivity—an area connecting deep analytical methods.
  • His research also spans Probability Theory, showcasing rare breadth for a young mathematician.

Prof. Khare’s ability to blend tools from disparate areas—including combinatorics, analysis, and algebra—has been widely praised. One notable achievement includes:

  • In 2007, he posed an open problem on the personal blog of Prof. Terence Tao (Fields Medalist, 2006), sparking wide academic interest.
  • This eventually led to their co-authorship of a 60-page paper, published in the American Journal of Mathematics, solving a long-standing open problem—a rare distinction for any mathematician, particularly a young researcher.

Awards & Global Recognition

Prof. Khare’s prolific contributions have been recognized through numerous honors:

  • Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize — one of India’s most prestigious scientific awards.
  • Ramanujan Fellowship
  • Swarna Jayanti Fellowship
  • Fellowship of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bengaluru
  • Active collaborations with globally renowned mathematicians such as Terence Tao, Mihai Putinar, and Alexander Belton.

Prof. Gadadhar Mishra, a respected figure in Indian mathematics, has ranked Prof. Khare among the top 2% mathematicians worldwide—underscoring his global standing.
